Boma Johnson will lead a field trip to the Arizona Strip area south of Colorado City, visiting the sites of Paiute Cave, Nampaweap, and the P-II Uinkaret Pueblo.

He picked a “COOL SITE” in two aspects: daytime temps and good vibes! These sites are located at between 5800 to 6500 feet elevation, so they will be cooler than St. George. We will travel south of Colorado City about 40 miles to a very short and rocky walk to Paiute Cave with its colorful display of Anasazi and Paiute pictographs in an ancient lava tube. Next we will go on down to the Mt. Trumbull area, find a lunch spot & have a look at the Uinkaret Pueblo ruins, then on to Nampaweap to see an extended series of rock art panels and a very unique natural land mark. From our parking area, our walk is a ½ mile walk on an old road to the site. At the site there are many basalt rocks to crawl over, but nothing too extreme (see top photo). Our return to St. George will be via the Mt. Trumbull loop road from the old school house location north past Wolf Hole, and back into town from the south on River Road. After leaving Colorado City the roads are graded dirt or gravel, with only a few rough places where 4WD would be welcome. On dry days a high clearance vehicle is OK, but if it is wet, a 4x4 is mandatory, as well as ride and gas cost sharing. If there is serious rain just before the trip, then we’ll probably postpone the field trip to another date.

We will meet at the HURRICANE Walmart, west of Hurricane on Highway 9 / State Street at 8 am SHARP, May 12th. Better be on time- the “Eager Beavers” may leave you behind in their dust! We will gather at the big parking lot on the south side next to the highway. Fill your gas tank before the meet-up- there are no services of any kind on the Arizona Strip!! Bring your lunch and lots to drink, good footgear, your camera of course, and a brimmed hat if needed for sunny days or general personal coolness vibes!

Trip numbers are limited to 16 people, so please sign up early. Remember only paid-up and members who have signed their waivers of DAS are eligible to go on field trips. Please do not bring friends or family members (unless they are members also).

See you soon!
